Hypnosis, holiday homes & frozen turkey hunt: 5 things to do in Maine this weekend

Written by: Shannon Bryan

Need a turkey? This weekend is for you. If you haven’t yet acquired your plump bird for next week’s holiday dinner, head up to the Frozen Turkey Hunt. Your family could win a frozen turkey, among other prizes. You can also seize the opportunity to poke around other peoples’ houses during the Holiday Homes Tour in Portland’s West End and gain inspiration for your own holiday decorations. There’s also a film series in Brunswick, hypnosis in Freeport, and a play within a play in Portland.

For the weekend of November 21-24, 2013:

1. See film. Be inspired.

Maine Film Premiere with GLP Films

6 pm and 8 pm Thursday | Frontier Cafe, Brunswick | $8 | www.explorefrontier.com
Watch six award-winning short-films from around the globe that focus on urban food, adventure and sustainable travel, wildlife conservation, community education, community empowerment, and more. Learn things, and meet folks who are doing amazing work (and maybe win stuff in the special event raffle!).

2. Experience an epic adventure

8 pm Friday, Saturday & Sunday | Urban Farm Fermentory, Portland | $10 | facebook.com/LoremIpsumCollective
Interested in a duel with deal inside an East Bayside warehouse? Of course you are. The play GARGANTUA, written by local Ian Carlsen, will be performed inside a warehouse at Urban Farm Fermentory. It’s described as, “an epic adventure, a play-within-a-play, a funhouse mirror of reality. A comic dance macabre. A duel with death. A quest for answers. A love letter.” So, that’s what it is!

3. Poke around other people’s houses

Holiday Home Tours

10 am-4 pm Friday and noon-6 pm Saturday | Portland’s West End | $25 online, $30 at the door | facebook.com/thedivineseries
Design, wine, and other people’s houses. The Holiday Home Tours give you a chance to get inside some beautifully decorated Portland homes. Legally. (You have to ask permission to go inside a stranger’s house, so the police have told me). Professional designers will give each of the five homes a makeover that dazzles, and there’ll be food cooking up in the kitchens, too.

4. Get hypnotized

Family Hypnosis Show with Roderick Russell

8 pm Friday, 7 pm Saturday | Freeport Theater of Awesome, Freeport | $12 kids/seniors, $17 adults | www.awesometheater.com
Get hypnotized! Better yet, have your friends and family get hypnotized to make dinner, clean up, and give you things. Or at least do ridiculous things on stage so you can record the embarrassment for posterity. In this completely interactive show, nationally touring artist Roderick Russell demonstrates the power of the mind to create our reality – and induce laughter in the process.

5. Hunt (frozen) turkeys

Frozen Turkey Hunt

11 am-1 pm Saturday | Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Boothbay | Free | www.mainegardens.org
I hate to be the one to tell you this, but there aren’t actually going to be frozen turkeys hidden around the grounds at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. They’re hiding apples, and the apples correspond with prizes, including frozen turkeys, gift cards, and a cord of wood (which will come in handy this winter when you have the biggest backyard bonfire ever! Or whatever else you choose to do with it).
