Maine Apple Guide: Pick-your-own orchards, recipes & apple etiquette

It’s apple season in Maine. Maybe you’ve noticed. Whether you buy your apples pre-picked from the market or prefer to get all hands-on with the fruit and pick it yourself, we’ve got the apple guide to suit you. From pick-you-own orchards to apple recipes and even a few videos on apple-picking etiquette and apple storage, consider your apple needs fulfilled.

be surprised at the things you didn’t know (twisting the

Don’t let those apples go bad before their time! If you plan
on picking a peck or more, be sure to store them the way
they like best.

Apple Recipes

Sure, you could stick with the classics: Apple pie, apple crisp, apple fritters. But this year, why not get creative? Heck, pick enough apples and you could make one of everything. Here are a few apple recipes we think are worth trying:

Open for picking 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday through October.
Pick your own apples and purchase cider, jam and doughnuts and more. Hayrides most weekends through October.

Giles Family Farm

Open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Libby & Son U-Picks
86 Sawyer Mountain Road, Limerick
Pick your own apples, high-bush blueberries and raspberries – check website for what’s picking that day. Apples and raspberries should be available through October. Also purchase freshly pressed cider, donuts, kettle corn, caramel apples and more.

McDougal Orchards

Pick your own apples and raspberries – check website for apple varieties. Enjoy hayrides on weekends, pet farm animals and purchase pumpkins and sweet cider.

Pine View Orchards

Pick your own apples on semi-dwarf trees. Nine varieties.

Raven Hill Orchard

Snell Family Farm

Pick your own apples and pumpkins through Oct. 18 and enjoy the corn maze, petting zoo, disc golf and more. Activities continue to Nov. 1.

Wallingford’s Fruit House
1240 Perkins Ridge, Auburn
Open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
Pick your own apples and enjoy wagon rides, fresh donuts, pies and dumplings.

Rocky Ridge Orchard & Bakery
Route 201, Bowdoin
Open daily; call for hours.
Pick Macs and Cortlands and buy maple syrup, local crafts, soaps and honey.

Doles Orchard
187 Doles Ridge Road, Limington
Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
PYO apples and raspberries and buy other products from the farm store.

Lakeside Orchards
318 Readfield Road, Manchester
Open Mon. through Fri. from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sat. and Sun. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Pick your own apples through Columbus Day. Wagon rides provide transportation to the orchard.

Boothby’s Orchard
366 Boothby Road, Livermore
Farm stand open noon to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Wagon rides to pick-your-own orchard.

Pietree Orchard
803 Waterford Road, Sweden
Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Pick your own organic and conventional apples, as well as pumpkins.

Apple Acres Farm
363 Durgintown Road, South Hiram
Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
PYO or visit the gift store for pre-picked apples.

Kelly Orchards
1881 Route 109 and 82 Sanborn Road, Acton
Pick your own apples and pumpkins or buy pre-picked at the farm stand.

Sweetser’s Apple Barrel and Orchards
19 Blanchard Road, Cumberland
Open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The orchard grows 39 varieties of apples for PYO, or buy them at the farm market. Check the website for what’s available.
