Prelude, Kennebunkport

Nov 30-Dec 9

You know those utopian-looking holiday cards depicting a New England Christmas with carriage rides, giant trees draped in white lights and cheery, rosey-cheeked townspeople sipping hot cocoa and peering into downtown shop windows? Yea, Prelude in Kennebunkport is kinda like that.

Except the carriage rides are really jaunts in an historic electric streetcar, one of the decorated trees is made out of lobster traps, and the hot cocoa might be a cocktail.

Now in its 31st year, Prelude doesn’t skimp on Christmas tradition. The annual tree lighting takes place at 5:30 pm Friday, there’s a live nativity (6 pm Fri), craft fairs, fish chowder supper (4 pm Fri), and string quartets.

But there’s also Christmas karaoke (9 pm Fri), a bonfire (7 pm Fri), and a Fire & Ice Bar (Dec 7-8). And don’t forget the lighting of the Lobster Trap Tree (7 pm Fri) in nearby Cape Porpoise.

Take photos with Frosty, partake in a Christmas card workshop, make a gingerbread house. And that’s just the start of it.

While the holidays are rarely postcard-perfect for any of us, Kennebunkport sure does come close.
