Warm-weather education: 16 cool things to learn
May 15, 2013

The impending summer will certainly teach you a few things (like how sunburns are awful and ice cream is awesome). You might even learn that a cup of wine and some cellophane are an easy trick to get rid of fruit flies (local hint: the Semi Sweet from Maine Mead Works will lure those buggers in like nothing else). But if you’d like to take your warm-weather education to a level beyond dairy products and peeling skin, check out our list of lessons and workshops that’ll teach you something fun and unforgettable:

Some of Maine’s uniqueness comes naturally. But most of Maine’s “weird” comes straight from the courageous, crafty — dare I say, a little strange — minds of our fair locals. If you can dream it, a Mainer can build it (with a bit of elbow grease, some scrap metal and a blowtorch).

Feel that? It’s called the sun. It’s nice, isn’t it? Take advantage of the rays and warm weather and have your drink outside on one of the sweet decks at these Maine bars and restaurants, because cocktails always taste better outside:

Cinco de Mayo is an annual celebration Mexican heritage (the date harkens from the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 and the Mexican army’s unexpected win over the French during Mexico’s fight for independence). Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, which is celebrated later in the year on September 16. Still, Cinco de Mayo is a welcome occasion to celebrate Mexican history, culture, food, and drink, and we’ve rounded up some local spots where you can do just that.

Lucky for us reluctant runners, there’s a litany of upcoming runs zombie invasions, obstacle courses, mud pits, colored powder showers, escaped fugitives, and finish-line beers to keep us focused on anything but the fact that we’re actually running.

13 things to do this winter that don’t require snow

13 things to do this winter that don’t require snow
February 19, 2013

“It starts snowing in November and we don’t see the ground again until May.” An old roommate once described a Maine winter that way. And while it may historically be true, the winters of recent memory – and, like, right now – don’t seem keen on abiding by the six-months-of-snow-covered-ground rule. It’s been warm-ish in Maine’s southern parts. The snow has melted. And the snowshoeing? Not great at the moment, unless you head farther west or north. So what does one do to keep occupied in Winter when the snow is being elusive? This stuff:

A French Toast Alerts System might prove handy here in Maine, too. Or a Ryan’s Irish Cream Alert System. Both are swell on a snow day. But weather forecasters are helpful to listen to, too. And they’re projecting quite the storm for Friday into Saturday. Events are being canceled. Driving anxiety is beginning to build. And people are starting to despair. I mean, it’s a storm! What are we gonna do!?!?

Valentine’s Day Guide 2013

Valentine’s Day Guide 2013
February 03, 2013

Ah, Valentine’s Day. No other holiday inspires such thoughtful flower-sending, feeling-sharing and chocolate-eating. It’s a day for heart-shaped cards, the Valentine’s Day Bandit and the whispering of sweet nothings. But not everyone feels the love when Feb. 14 rolls in on its bedazzled pink bicycle, all giggles and swoons, with a rose bouquet spilling out of the bike basket and the scent of cotton candy lingering in its path through the city.
