Who I Met

Mini post: who I met in one hour at Wienerfest.

By: Greta Rybus

I went to Wienerfest in Belfast last weekend (insert joke here). I was there for a bachelorette party (insert second joke here). Of the three types of wieners, I saw two: hotdogs and Dachshunds. Although I’m sure the third type was there, too.
People are crazy about their wieners- the Dachshund type- and people celebrated their tiny, elongated dogs with a costume contest, wiener-bobbing event, and parade. I talked with a handful of owners about their pets, and why they love them so much.

LINDSEY KETCH WITH PIPER ROSE AND ELLIE MAE

TELL ME ABOUT HOW ELLIE MAE AND PIPER CAME INTO YOUR LIFE?

We got Ellie three years ago. We had three dogs at the time, and one of them was getting older, so we decided to adopt another one. We got her from Paws-n-Claws in Windham, Maine. We had been looking for her for a long time, and they called and said, “We have a dog that we think is perfect for you.” And I knew immediately that we shared the same personality. She’s hyper, outgoing, she loves to swim and go on little hikes. Both of them love the water. They are very friendly, family dogs. They love other dogs and people. They just love to go with us everywhere. They love to ride in the car with us and going to the rapids, the ocean and the forest.

TELL ME A STORY ABOUT YOUR DOGS.

I have two stories about Ellie Mae. She’s my best buddy. This past year,I had a really hard time with her. It was a hard time for us both. I was taking her for a walk, and two doors down from our house there’s a German Shepherd. He ran out into the street and attacked her. I was petrified. She was ripped along her abdomen. We didn’t know if she was going to make it or not, they had to do emergency surgery on her. She’s fine now, but we are trying to resocialize her. That happened four months ago.  But it’s amazing how dogs heal. Just yesterday, I took her to her favorite spot, the Limington Rapid. There’s an island out there about 100-200 feet from shore. I put a little life jacket on her, and wherever I swim, she’ll follow me. So she swam all the way out there and back with me.

 TELL ME ABOUT PIPER.

We have another Dachshund at home who has a degenerated disc. She’s not able to play as much and walk as much, and Ellie needed a friend. We’ve been wanting to get another one, and it was a good excuse, so we got Piper Rose.

 WHY DACHSHUNDS?

I guess once you are a Dachshund person, you are always a Dachshund person. It’s hard to explain, but it’s a crazy obsession.

DO YOU HAVE DACHSHUND THINGS AROUND YOUR HOUSE?

Yes, sadly. When I got a new car recently, I had to get a Dachshund keychain. My mom has Dachshund PJs, and I haven’t gone that far. But I am always finding Dachshund quotes on Facebook .

JAMES AND AMANDA BLAKE WITH LOKI

HOW DID LOKI COME INTO YOUR LIFE?

James- My wife found a breeder in Massachusetts, she went down and visited. He was the first born. She actually witnessed him bide his time to gain possession of a rubber chicken. The whole family was all over it, fighting for it. And somehow, the chicken was discarded while they were distracted, and he went over and hid under the porch with it.

Amanda- He was very crafty and wily.

TELL ME A STORY ABOUT LOKI.

James- He ages very abruptly. He grew up very quickly.

Amanda- He went from tiny, tiny puppy to this in a week and half. He’s six month.

 WHY DACHSUNDS?

Amanda- They are just really chill dogs, and really loyal.

CARMELO WITH STITCH

HOW DID STITCH COME INTO YOUR LIFE?

It’s kid of a rescue story. We found him in an ad in Uncle Henry’s. A woman had a few dogs and had to split up with her boyfriend, so there was a lot of angst for her. He paid $100.

TELL ME A STORY ABOUT STITCH.

Well, he’s a pretty good dog. He gets along with the other dogs. He loves to eat. When we got him, he was overweight. He was 23 pounds, and we’ve got him down to 19 pounds.

HE’S A BIKER DOG TODAY!

We were looking for a costume because we are always prepared for Wienerfest. We ended up at Marshall’s. We were going to get a Patriot’s shirt, but we saw this in the checkout line.

WHY DACHSUNDS?

Well, my wife has always loved Dachshunds. If it was I, I’d like Bullmastiff.  But I do love him just the same.
