The Maine Dish

The Red Dragon Roll at Sapporo is my new best friend.

Oh God. Jiro is going to KILL me.

Having just watched Jiro Dreams of Sushi for the third time this week, I was a little embarrassed to order the Red Dragon Roll at Sapporo tonight. It seemed, well, sacrilegious. But I was so hungry I could’ve eaten the chopsticks themselves, so I picked one of the specialty rolls for its sheer girth and this is what landed on the bar in front of me.

Oh Lord in heaven, this roll must’ve weighed twelve ounces. It was almost a meal in itself, and this is coming from a girl who can put down A LOT of sushi. Warm and crunchy tempura shrimp was nestled in nori and rice and rolled in black tobiko. Topped with thin slices of avocado and tuna and finished with a hefty dollop of spicy mayo, this is probably the kind of sushi that would make Jiro homicidal.

Well, he and I will have to disagree on this one. I have room in my life for this type of overblown Americanized monstrosity. Crunchy. Chewy. Spicy. Creamy. It’s a one stopper. And I ate it ALL.
