The Maine Dish

Like poutine, Portland? Well, you should try this one.

I had a meeting last night at Walter’s on Union Street before I headed over to what was sure to be a six hour band rehearsal for this battle of the bands thing I’m in tonight.  I was famished, so naturally I made a light and healthy selection from the bar menu: POUTINE. Now, I share the commonly-held opinion that the two best poutines in Portland are at Nosh and Duckfat, but I’m going to let you in on a little secret: Walter’s poutine is worth a special trip.

The thin cut frîtes and huge chunks of cheese curd were already making me happy, but the gravy…oh lawdy the gravy…was a deep brown rosemary-chicken sauce so satiny and rich it bordered on demiglâce and so copious that it required a bowl. All that was missing was a hunk of crusty bread to make use of the leftover gravy. Next time I’ll remember to ask.
