Newz by The Nunz

An attempt at extending the weekend

By: Holly Nunan

I can’t quite wrap my head around the fact that it is Monday again. If you’re in as much denial as I am about the fact that the beginning of the week is here and the weekend is over then here are some cool happenings that’ll make it seem as if the weekend’s been extended right on into Monday!  Check it out.

There’ll be some free bluegrass over at Empire Dine and Dance in Portland where you can take in some fine, traditional bluegrass courtesy of Portland’s own bluegrass supergroup, The Stowaways, as well as participate in an open bluegrass jam session that starts downstairs right around 6.  So bring something to pick and/or pluck and get ready to jam out, The Stowaways will keep your toes tapping with a set of tunes that’ll start after the open jam right around 8pm.

If you’re looking to check out some Monday night rock and roll action then make your way over to the DIY venue at 442 St. John Street in Portland for tonight’s show featuring No Sir, I Won’t, Endless Jags and Athbasca.  There’ll be everything on the musical menu from punk to straight up rock, a little bit of metal and everything in between, check it out starting at 7 o’clock.

Unique and different are two adjectives that don’t even begin to describe electronic musician Dan Deacon, who returns to Portland tonight with a show at SPACE Gallery.  Once just a solo artist, Deacon has begun collaborating with large groups of people and tonight he brings some of those individuals to the stage with him for tonight’s show, which gets underway right around 8 o’clock tonight.

Free Monday action over at RiRa on Commercial Street in Portland where yet another installment of Evan Walsh aka EvGuy’s open mic series takes place.  Each and every Monday evening EvGuy hosts his own version of an adult talent show starting right around 8 o’clock.  Instruments are provided and if you can’t actually play one, EvGuy will be more than happy to bang out a manageable version of a song for you to sing along to.

Monday means another fun jam session known as The Players Ball over at The Big Easy in Portland.  Tonight musicians and music lovers alike are welcome to come play with and/or watch some of the most talented cats around do their thing on stage. If you come to play you get in for free and if you’re just coming by to take in the spectacle of it all its only three bucks.  Things get fun, funky and collaborative beginning at 9 o’clock.

Down at The Red Door in Portsmouth, NH you can check out some incredible indie folk tunes from Darlingside and singer-songwriter Sarah Blacker.  Tonight’s show gets started around 8.

Make the most out of this Monday by checking out a great show that’s happening at Slates in Hallowell. Tonight Portland’s Post Provost will be doing their experimental, space folk/pop thing with songs that incorporate everything from ukulele, trombone, accordian and more.  Things get underway right around 8:15pm.
