The election is finally over (goodbye nasty political ads and equally nasty facebook statuses)! Some of you are feeling hopeful today, while others are anxiety ridden and angry. Regardless of how you are feeling right now, I’m going to ask you to take a deep breath and read on…because I’m about to offer up some advice that will cross party lines.
Several weeks ago, I was approached about the best entrepreneurial advice that I’ve ever gotten and here it is…“You don’t get rich by having a job”. Absorbing this advice has had the single biggest impact on my career, my life and my success. It’s about choosing your destiny and putting the burden upon yourself (no one else) to make your life meaningful and successful.
‘Having a job implies’ that you are working for someone else. You are fattening up someone else’s pockets. You are fulfilling someone else’s dreams. What about your dreams? What about your goals? Are you forfeiting your dreams because you have been fed the bulls**t that getting a ‘job’ IS the American Dream?
From an early age, we are taught that we need to do well in school and go to college to get a ‘good job’…that’s the American dream. But, is it? Is the American dream working for some large corporation, with a dress code, and doing the same thing over and over again, only to be laid off after several years of faithful employment? I don’t know about you..but that doesn’t seem like the American dream..more like the American drone. I’m not knocking corporate life, I spent many years in corporate life..but I remember feeling like…there’s gotta be something more than this. Maybe you are feeling this way too!
I challenge you to start making a Plan B. Whether you are unemployed, underemployed or currently working full-time…I challenge you to find a way that you can change your life, without having to ‘rely on a job’. Teach a class, write a book, sell something, develop your hobby, start a blog, these are all ways that you can start to work towards your dream, while you are employed or looking for work.
Now don’t get me wrong, this won’t happen overnight and it’s going to take a lot of work. I must’ve started and stopped a dozen businesses before I stumbled upon what I’m doing now. But guess what, I’m here. In the worst economic climate in of our generation, I have managed to be self-employed for almost 3 years. I make enough money to pay the bills, I just built a brand new house, my kids are fed and provided for, and I even have a little extra money to treat myself to a vacation every once in a while. And the best part is that I never have to punch a clock, I drop off & pick up my kids every day, and I can choose to work in my pajamas everyday if I want. That my friends is MY American Dream. What is yours and what are you doing to get there?
