From a soul throw down at Empire Dine & Dance to hip hop at The Big Easy, Wednesday’s got a little something for everyone

By: Holly Nunan

All right, let us all take a moment and high five ourself for making it half way through this regularly scheduled work week! After coming back from a long, holiday weekend I’d say we’re doing a great job of keeping the party going despite those pesky responsibilites. Tonight is chock full of tons of places to let loose, so let’s see what this Wednesday evening has to offer, shall we?

A great show will happening a bit north of Portland town this evening over in Newcastle as the Newcastle Publick House hosts singer/songwriter Connor Garvey.  Garvey’s fresh off a tour south of New England and will most likely be playing selections from his latest record, Where Ocean Meets Land.  Connor Garvey brings his own brand of acoustic folk-rock-indie-soul to life this evening beginning at 6:30pm.

The DIY venue at 26 Poland Street in Portland invites one and all to an intimate basement show that will highlight some deep, emotional singer-songwriters such as local music man, Wesley Allen Hartley, Billy Carr, Kouros, and Oakland CA’s electro-folk duo Electrician. Donations are welcome and the show gets underway right around 7 o’clock tonight.

A massive metal show takes over Port City Music Hall on Congress Street in Portland tonight as the heavy as heck High on Fire takes the stage this evening.  Things get loud beginning at 8.

Looking to try out that new tune you’ve been meticulously crafting? Then why not check out this evening’s open mic over at Slainte Wine Bar & Lounge in Portland? Tonight up and coming musicians take the stage to plays some tunes starting in at 8 o’clock. It’s free, fun, and local singer-songwriter Dustin Saucier will be on hand to host and play some jams for you to enjoy this Hump Day eve.

The Squid Jiggers return to the stage of Bull Feeney’s tonight with their own brand of folk music that’s infused with yeast, barley, and hops, basically some good ol’ fashioned drinking music!  Tonight the fellas get the good times rollin’ right around 8 o’clock.

Two soul giants battle it out during this week’s edition of The Clash of the Titans at Empire Dine and Dance in Portland. Tonight the incomparable Sam Cooke takes on the soulful Marvin Gaye for this week’s match up. Things get started right around 9 o’clock so check it out.

You better believe that it’s going down tonight over at The Big Easy in Portland as things get rhymetastic for another installment of Rap Night. Each and every Wednesday Ill By Instinct and El Shupacabra host an epic party featuring some of local hip-hops heaviest hitters. Things get fresh right around 9 o’clock and it’s wicked cheap as three bucks get you in the door, so check it out.
