Sneak peek: Bull Moose Mill Creek (opening Monday!)

There are still plenty of boxes to unpack, albums to alphabetize, and DVDs to shelve, but the new Bull Moose store in South Portland’s Mill Creek shopping center is just about ready for business.

Bull Moose took over the former Blockbuster Video location, where I used to rent movies and occasionally return them on time.

They knocked out a wall or two and expanded the place to a spacious 11,000 square feet (the better to house all those CDs, books, and movies).

The lighting is gentler than it used to be, and the rooftop rainwater system got an upgrade (all the better for nearby Casco Bay).  Even the nearby traffic light is being improved to help with Broadway congestion (all the better for all of us).

The staples are all finding their place – the movies getting acquainted with one another while the hardcovers file quietly onto the bookcases, casually reading each other’s blurbs.

Musicians accessories have been hung by the windows with care, in the hopes that – well, musicians, probably – soon would be there.

There’s also a soon-to-be well-stocked toy section, boasting playtime wonders like bouncy balls, sleds, animated stuffed animals, puzzles, and maracas.

Near the registers,  smartly curated selection of novelty items, including “Understand Men” lip balm and “What the Hell” hand sanitizer (which kills 99.9% of germs found on children).

Bull Moose owner Brett Wickard said he’s excited to be opening the store’s eleventh location. Then he made a Spinal Tap reference about “getting to 11” that I didn’t get until I googled it.

Brett also hopes the store becomes a place where the SoPo community can come browse, shop, and hang out.

I don’t mean to speak for the whole neighborhood, but I think it’s safe to say we will. And often.

Welcome to the neighborhood, Bull Moose!

A soft opening is scheduled for Monday. The grand opening is Nov 17, complete with musical performances by Pete Witham & The Cozmik Zombies and Dark Follies beginning at 3 pm.

On Nov 18, Rob Schreiber’s Standard Issue with perform at 11 am with special guests from the South Portland High School Jazz Ensemble and Don Campbell performs at 2 pm.

The store will be open from 9 am until 11 pm daily and until 12:30 am every Monday to sell Tuesday’s new releases.
