Sweet flippin’ flapjacks, it is finally Friday! (Still working on that catch phrase. I know it’s pretty awesome.) It’s also First Friday around Portland so there’s lots to do! I’ve gotta say I’ve not been this excited for a Friday in a long time and thankfully tonight lives up to the hype, so let’s check it out!
There’s a ton of stuff happening early in the evening tonight starting with the first installment of Frugal Fridays over at Empire Dine and Dance in Portland. Beginning at 5 o’clock Portland’s own The Substitutes will be bringing you the best in old school pop and rock with everything from The Beatles to The Who to The Monkees and more, even better this evening’s early show is absolutely free. So if you’re looking to wind down your workweek with some good ol’ fashioned rock n’ roll, swing on by The Empire and check ‘em out.
Local musician David Jacquet does his acoustic duo thing over at Krista’s in this evening. Beginning at 6 o’clock, David will be playing some acoustic jams alongside his Uke n’ Smile bandmate, Keith Kitchen. It’s a free gig and there’s great food to boot, so check it out if you’re in the area this evening.
One of my all time favorite local musicians takes to the stage in celebration of his first solo effort this evening over at One Longfellow Square in Portland. Dominic Lavoie, best known for his work in pyschedelic rock n’ roll act Dominic and The Lucid, releases his debut solo effort under the guise of Sha Sha Sha with an eclectic mix of the area’s finest talent to help him bring the pysched out album to life tonight. Herbcraft and Gabrielle Raymond will kick off the festivities, which get underway right around 8 o’clock.
If you want to see a tower of rock and roll power in the form of stacked amps, loud guitars and crushing drums then I would highly suggest making your way down to The Asylum in Portland tonight where two local favorites Murcielago and Whitcomb team up with their pals from down south Gozu and Freedom Hawk for a night of epic rocking and/or rolling. The foundation starts shaking beginning at 9.
The party polished Bob Charest Band will be entertaining one and all, all night long upstairs at Empire at Empire Dine and Dance in Portland tonight. This versatile and fun group will be rockin’ the party starting at 9 o’clock.
Friday might mean shaking what your momma gave you for some and if that’s the case for you, well then get on down to Flask Lounge on Spring Street in Portland where DJ Jamie O’Sullivan will be hosting his LOVE event. LOVE will feature O’Sullivan bringing you the best house, techno and disco to shake your can to. You can check it out starting at 9pm.
The Big Easy presents a full night of funky reggae, ska and good old rock and roll with El Grande and Roots, Rhythm & Dub. El Grande will be bringing their funky grooves full of upbeat horns and danceable reggae and ska to the stage this evening alongside the reggae dub fusion of Roots, Rhythm & Dub. Things get started right around 9 tonight.
A solid night of hip hop hits the stage at Geno’s in Portland tonight as the dynamic duo known as Trails gets things going alongside Dray Sr., the Manic Mondays Crew and Jay Caron. Anticipate things to start poppin’ off starting at 9 tonight.
First Friday at Bayside Bowl also means the return of Jambowl. ME3 is excited to be teaming up with local act the Trickle Down for a night of crunchy jamming. Things get starting right around 8 tonight.
If you’re down south this evening make sure to make your way over to The Stone Church in Newmarket, NH where Rustic Overtones will be bringing the party with their own brand of alternative rock. Things get funky and fun starting around 9.
I’m heading up north this evening to Guilford where the six-headed, whiskey drinking, guitar-slinging beast known as The Mallett Brothers Band will be doing their thing. Luke and Will Mallett are from nearby Dover-Foxcroft so it always turns in to a wild sort of homecoming over at The Red Maple Inn when the fellas are in town. Boots begin stomping around 9.
