Newz by The Nunz

Super sized Saturday

By: Holly Nunan

Oh sweet, glorious Saturday, I love you.  You mean so many wonderful things such as sleeping in, brunching and then later in the day, putting on last night’s booze drenched Party Pants and doing it all over again!  If I could, I would give you a smooch for being so incredibly righteous. Oh man.  Anyway, I hope all of your Friday adventures were as fun as mine and that you’re ready for round two this evening as I’m ready to give you a run down of what the what is all around town and beyond.

If you’re looking for a little Saturday night pre-game action or maybe an early evening out so you can be in tip-top form Sunday morning when you slug down five mimosas, why not check out Portland’s own bluesman, Lex Jones as he plays Mama’s Crowbar this afternoon?  Lex will be playing the blues over at Mama’s Crowbar up on Munjoy Hill in Portland around 4pm today so check it out.

Downstairs at The Asylum in Portland tonight Milled Pavement presents another evening of everything from dubstep to techno, house music and more with DJ Beatmo, Mike Clouds, Ruse and H.Jort & St. Pierre.  Things get started around 9 and are free.

Bayside Bowl keeps your Saturday evening rocking, rolling and also bowling with a triple bill of some great indie rock bands tonight.  Starting at 9, check out sets from When Particles Collide, Yes We Kin and The Rationales.

Slainte Wine Bar & Lounge on Preble Street in Portland invites you to their free evening of music with a very interesting line up featuring a touring band from Boston who plays their first Portland show as well as some familiar faces.  Starting at 9 check out sets from Boston’s Personal Finance and solo sets from Travis Alexander of the band Ghost Thrower and Mike Levenseller of Dead Sun, Dead Earth.

If you’re looking to shake it down and shake it out this evening then make sure you get your can down to The Big Easy in Portland where two super fine funk and soul bands will be rocking the party all night long. Beginning at 9, The ToneKings and HD R&B plan on bringing the funk and soul to your funk and soul holes, so shimmy on over.

I have seriously been looking forward to tonight’s show at Empire Dine and Dance for quite sometime and cannot wait to sing along and dance like a fool to the killer songs off of my pal Kurt Baker’s new record Brand New Beat.  Tonight KB and his band celebrate the release of his second solo album with a rock and roll extravangaza which will also feature sets from Portland’s The Pontiff’s, Austria’s Dee Cracks and Wisconsin’s Spruce Bringsteen.  Power poppin’ gets hoppin’ starting at 9 o’clock tonight.

A big ol’ high five and Happy Anniversary wish is going out to Flask Lounge on Spring Street in Portland as the club celebrates its fifth year in operation and tonight they do it in style with performances from The Other Bones, DJs Dark City, Corbin, Pop Girl, Jamie O’Sullivan and Mr. Dereloid.  The celebration begins at 8 o’clock.

Geno’s in Portland welcomes you to an evening of alternative rockin’ and rollin’ with a debut show from Portland’s own Joint Collison alongside Low 90 and ForMorning.  Tonight’s show gets crankin’ right around 9pm.

The fellas in Kilcollins bring their rock and roll party down south this evening as they gear up for a fun filled night down at The Brunswick in Old Orchard Beach.  Beginning at 8:30 the boys will be playing covers of tunes that everyone knows, loves, and can shake a tail feather to.

A show of epic eclectic proportion is taking place at The Oak & The Ax on Main Street in Biddeford tonight.  Starting at 8 o’clock you can see Planets Around The Sun off on their latest tour alongside Janane Tripp, Samuel James, B.R. Garm, Nasty Negligee, id m theftable and Brainshadows.
