Party down at Port City Music Hall with Black Joe Lewis & Murcielago

By: Holly Nunan

Yeah, yeah, yeah it’s Friday the 13th and suddenly everyone’s got a case of Triskaidekaphobia.  As if you could even say that word last night after rockin’ out so hard during last night’s Thirsty Thursday festivities. So really, don’t let some silly little superstition mess up your whole Friday steaze.  I mean, definitely run the other way if you see some sketchy dude in a mask, but other than that I think everything’s gonna be a-okay, my babies. Here’s what’s on cracking for this finally Friday.

Get things started early this Friday evening with a great show over at the Porthole on Commercial Street in Portland where the party kicks off at 5 o’clock with a solid set of straight up power-pop rock n’ roll tunes from Kurt Baker and his band. KB and company will be doing it to it until about 7 then Portland’s own funk and soul act Sly-Chi will hit the deck to close things out with some funk and soul for your funk and soul hole right on through the 8 o’clock hour.

Local singer-songwriter, Dave Jacquet will be providing the soundtrack for your early evening gatherings down at JP Thornton’s in South Portland. Starting at 6, you can catch Dave doing his solo acoustic thing, so if you’re in the area this finally Friday, swing through and check him out.

Southern Maine rockers, Too Late The Hero, headline a big ol’ Friday the 13th bash at Bernie’s in Nashua, NH this evening. In case ya didn’t know, Too Late The Hero are sure to be enjoyed by anyone who loves the pop-punk of Brand New, Thrice and Glassjaw. Joining the fellas on stage tonight will be Monarch, Dilemma, Chasing Dying Dreams, Housefires and more! Things kick off right around 7 o’clock tonight for this 18+ show.

The Stone Doctors and RetroRockerz return for an encore performance at tonight’s Battle of the Bands up at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor. Joining in the fun will also be newbies, The Time Pilots, who will compete for the best band title. These three bands will take their turns on stage this evening to raise money for The Acadia Hospital’s youth services program. The fun gets started right around 7, so if you’re up that way this Friday night, be sure to check it out!

Folk rock trio Silent Sam & The Evans will be pleasing earholes this evening as they play a free show starting at 7 o’clock over at Local Sprouts. These fellas will put a little pep in your step this Friday evening, so be sure to swing through and check ‘em out.

The avant-folk duo known as Arborea will be holding things down up in Lewiston tonight as they play a show at Guthrie’s. This evening’s performance will get underway right around 8pm, so check it out.

The Hive in Kennebunk continues their jazz series tonight with The Marc Chillemi Quintet. The quintet brings the classic hard bop sound of the 60s to life this evening as they get things grooving starting right around 8.

Truth be told, I’ve been looking forward to tonight’s show over at Port City Music Hall on Congress Street in Portland for quite some time. Not only is the gritty, bluesy, garage rocky, funk & soul act known as Black Joe Lewis and The Honeybears playing, but my all-time favorite local stoner rock act, Murcielago will be opening the show! Ah, so much mischief for me to get into tonight as things get going right around 8.

John McCain and Kate Beever bring their aptly named act, Beevermccain, to the stage of Local Buzz in Cape Elizabeth this Fridaye evening. The dup blend the sounds of their voices, a guitar, and a vibraphone together for something that is quite lovely and entertaining. Be sure to check Kate and John out if you’re in the Cape area around 8 o’clock this evening.

Another fun show swings through JP Thornton’s in South Portland tonight as Captain Ray and the Castaways are geared up to keep you dancing all Friday night long with some rock and/or roll starting right around 8 o’clock.

The Riverside Pub in Bath will be rocking with some of the area’s hardest hitting local acts taking to the stage this Friday. Beginning at 8, get ready to have your socks rocked off and your hair blown back by 13 High, Beyond The Fall and Venn Detta.

Michael Franti & Spearhead return to Portland tonight for an evening of high-energy funky reggae rock at The State Theatre. The Kopecky Family Band will kick things off starting right around 8.

If you’re up in the Blue Hill area this evening be sure to check out blues-rock act, The Shambles, who will be doing their thing starting at 8:30 over at the Black Anchor Village Pub.

Beginning at 8:30 this evening you can check out some good eats and tasty tunes down at The Frog & Turtle on Main Street in Westbrook where Pete Witham & The Cozmik Zombies will be taking over with their own brand of twisted Americana/rockabilly.

Holy frickin’ rock show, Batman! Tonight Geno’s explodes as a couple of local acts join forces for a night of ferocious Friday night rocking and rolling. Starting at 9, check out Covered in Bees with I Barbarian and other special guests.

A stellar night of local indie rock is ready to rock the stage of Slainte Wine Bar & Lounge on Preble Street in Portland tonight. Beginning at 9, swing through and check out the sounds of First in Maths with special guests Wood Burning Cat and Spaniards.

All of you dance floor fanatics who are looking to bust a move to some of the smoothest house grooves around should take a trip down to Flask Lounge in Portland tonight where Mr. Dereloid and his club crew of DJs such as Billadelphia, Kid Ray, Jamie O’Sullivan, Mee-Sho, A Dude Named Ray, and Mr. Richard Sin will be joining forces for a solid four hours of good vibes and good tunes. Do it to it, bust some moves, and spread some love this evening as this free dance party gets underway right around 9 o’clock.

As usual when it comes to Fridays here in Maine, this evening is one of those where I wish I could be ten places at once as there are so many terrific things going on, one of them being down at The Big Easy on Market Street in Portland where starting at 9 you’ll head all of the most pleasing psych-pop sounds your earholes could ever wish for as Jeff Beam, Tan Vampires and Wilder Maker take to the stage for a Friday chock full of the tastiest of tunes.

If you’re up in Waterville this evening and looking for some old timey, roots and bluegrass music, then head over to Mainely Brews where the Tricky Britches will be playing a set this evening. They’ll be serving up their own style of back porch jams starting right around 9:30.

If you’re looking to get a little weird tonight then get on over to Brian Boru in Portland where you can check out Velourosaurus. That’s right, Eric Bettencourt is back in town so he’s ready to tear it up with his old cover band Velourosaurus. Beginning at 9:30 the fellas will be bringing you the best jams with selections from The Beatles to Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder, Charlie Daniels, Cee Lo Green, and many more.

If the weather holds out tonight be sure to check out super fun Portland pop rockers, Div Kid, out on the Amigos patio in the Old Port. The fellas will be providing the soundtrack to your finally Friday starting right around 9:30.

Get ‘er doing (WHAT?) to some of the best tunes the 90s ever had to offer from such bands as Sublime, Blink 182, the GinBlossoms, Everclear, No Doubt and even Chumbawumba (yes, Chumbawumba) up at Trackside Station in Rockland where Hello Newman will be priming the party right around 9:30.
