By: Holly Nunan

S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y NIGHT! The Bay City Rollers got it right when they demanded that everyone ‘keep on dancing to the rock and roll on Saturday night’ because tonight is saturated with good times and great music.  Lots and lots of ground to cover this evening so let’s jump right in.

Let’s get this started over at The Big Easy on Market Street in Portland where tonight features another installment of the Saturday Night Jazz, Blues & Soul Series with the one and only Lady Zen. Starting right around 8 this evening bear witness to the incomparable Lady Zen as she gets the party started with her unique take on soul, jazz and R&B. Zen will be joined by a some talented special guests so be sure to swing on by and check it out tonight.

Portland acoustic music and dance act Olas premieres Olas The Film this evening at SPACE Gallery in Portland. Heavily influed by Adalusian Flamenco and Arabic folk music, Olas is an original, all acoustic mash-up of very raw and passionated music and dance. Beginning at 8 o’clock you can check out this terrific film that captures the spirit of the group as well as a post-film performance.

If you’re looking to shake it out this Saturday night then get on over to Flask Lounge on Spring Street in Portland where DJs Che Ross and Barry Juicy host another Economic Dance Party alongside their very special guests The Hartfor Party Starts Union. Tonight’s dance party is free and gets underway right around 9.

Geno’s Rock Club in Portland turns things up a notch with a super heavy rock n’ roll show. Starting at 9 o’clock, check out some thunderous sets courtesy of Paige TurnerMouth Washington, Cryptic Overcast, and Swaath.

Brooklyn piano rocker Marco Benevento makes a stop in Portland tonight over at Empire Dine and Dance.  It’s funny because I was just commiserating with one of my pals about how there isn’t enough piano rock in my life so perhaps tonight’s the night to check something fresh out.  Benevento will be joined this evening by Portland’s own indie rock act Whale Oil. Things get underway right around 9 this evening.

A few more places to shake a tail feather this evening incluce Slainte Wine Bar & Lounge on Preble Street in Portland where local DJ Mr. Dereloid will be serving up the finest underground dance music for you to bust a move to beginning at 9.

Also downstairs at The Asylum in Portland tonight is this Saturday’s Home Event, which cleverly enough features house music from DJs Marcus Caine, Chris Gauthier and Ryan Tapia.  It’s a free event and tonight the fellas welcome veteran Portland DJ Popgirl23 into the fold for some fun. It’s free, fun and gets started right around 9pm.

If you just want to kick it with a beverage and take in the scenes of the Old Port on a Saturday night then head over to Sonny’s right around 10 o’clock where mosart212 will be spinning records all night long.

Northern Maine’s acoustic guitar slinger Travis Cyr visits Bangor this evening for a performance at the Nocturnem Draft Haus. Starting at 8:30, Travis will play some of his best tunes, stomp his feet, sweat a bit and break some strings – all in all it sounds like a mighty good time, so stop by and check him out.

If you’re up in Newry, Maine this Saturday evening makes sure to get the party started with Shut Down Brown at The Phoenix. Shut Down Brown will be laying it down right around 9 o’clock with their signature sound and funkified covers of all of your favorite jams.

And down south this evening, be sure to make a stop at The Dover Brickhouse in Dover, NH tonight as two awesome Americana roots acts team up for a night of masterful music. Starting at 9, Jon Nolan will open up for Portland’s own This Way. If you’re in the area, be sure to check it out, as these fellas know how to have a dang good time.
