Hurdle the hump with some heavy hitting hip-hop at Empire Dine & Dance and The Big Easy this Wednesday evening

By: Holly Nunan

Here we go, if we can hurdle this hump we’ll be on the home stretch towards the freakin’ weekend, babies!  Luckily there’s a bunch of cool mid-week parties happening all around town, so let’s do it to it and power on through this Hump Day!

If you aren’t in Portland tonight and find yourself up near the Lewiston/Auburn area, you should check out the talented Denny Breau as he brings his rhythmically enticing guitar style to life over at Fast Breaks in Lewiston.  Denny is the younger brother of acclaimed guitarist Lenny Breau, who was also from Maine. If you’ve never heard of Lenny Breau and play guitar, I’d highly recommend checking out his stuff; it’s pretty crazy. Denny will be doing his thing beginning at 7 tonight, so if you’re around, check it out.

Another round of folk music infused with barley, sugar, yeast, and hops makes its way on to the stage of Bull Feeney’s tonight as The Squid Jiggers return to provide some drinking tunes to all those looking for a good time this evening. The fellas get things rolling right around 8 o’clock this evening and it’s free – so check it out!

For some free, Wednesday night open mic action, check out Slainte Wine Bar & Lounge over on Preble Street in Portland where you can see some up and coming musicians sing some tunes or even sign up to play some songs of your own.  Hosted by local singer-songwriter Dustin Saucier, this evening’s open mic gets underway right around 8pm.

Tonight a vast array of talented musicians gather for this week’s Clash of the Titans at Empire Dine and Dance on Congress Street in Portland as Outkast takes on Kanye West. Tonight the battle heats up with members of Model Airplane, Jaw Gems, Grant Street Orchestra, Lady Zen, Sandbag and more as they bring these hip-hop heavies head to head. Things go down right around 9 o’clock upstairs at The Empire.

Of course Wednesday night also means that it’s time for things to get poppin’ over at The Big Easy on Market Street in Portland where this week’s installment of Rap Night will be happening. Each and every Hump Day evening local rap royalty Ill By Instinct and El Shupacabra host an epic party featuring some of the brightest rappers around. Things get fresh beginning right around the 9 o’clock hour, so head on down and check it out.

The handsome and talented fellas of Tricky Britches will be throwing down some old timey, roots, bluegrass tunes over at Blue on Congress Street in Portland tonight. The fellas will be serving up their own brand of back porch style bluegrass beginning at 9pm.
