Dinosaur Jr. returns to Portland tonight with a sonically satisfying show at The State Theatre

By: Holly Nunan

We are truly almost there, guys and gals, almost there!  We’re drawing in on the freakin’ weekend and thankfully this Thursday seems to be the true kick-off to another event filled few days. Hopefully your party pants are pressed because this Thursday is bringing some serious thunder to your nightlife.  Check it out.

Sometimes all you really need is a good laugh and tonight at The Asylum in Portland you’ll be able to get exactly what you need thanks to this week’s edition of Local Laughs.  Beginning at 8 o’clock you can check out comedy sets from local comedy masters James Spizuoco, Lue Avent, Ian Stuart, Phoebe Angle and Connor McGrath.  It’s free, it’s fun, and it’s always a hoot, so check it out and get your laugh on!

Time to whip out those oversized sport coats and bust a move tonight as Port City Music Hall on Congress Street welcomes the Talking Heads tribute band, Start Making Sense. Get ready to burn down the house beginning at 8 o’clock.

Things are bound to get awesome this evening over at The State Theatre in Portland as Amhesrt, MA’s Dinosaur Jr take the stage in celebration of their 25th anniversary. These alternative rockers are ready to blow minds alongside opening act Hush Arbors. Things get underway right around 8 o’clock.

If you’re looking to shake what your momma gave ya all night long then look no further than Flask Lounge in Portland where the Blaqdada Dance Party commences right around 9. Hosted by Bary Juicy and Che Ros tonight’s event is going to get funky, so swing on by if you’re looking to get down and shake those hips this Thirstday evening.

The unofficial Dinosaur Jr. party will be taking place at Slainte Wine Bar & Lounge this evening with some truly fantastic indie rock bands that’ll be keeping your Thursday moving along at a nice, steady pace. Beginning at 10 o’clock you can check out sets from Mount Sharp, which features members from the now defunct acts Marie Stella and Mango Floss, as well as CHRY.

Local pop-rockers Kilcollins will be playing their regular Thursday night gig over at RiRa on Commercial Street in Portland. Tonight the fellas will be rockin’ all the tunes you know and love starting around 9:30.

The remaining members of Velourosaurus have joined forces with rock n’ roll piano man Kris Rodgers to bring you an evening full of awesome covers tonight over at Gritty’s in the Old Port.  Tonight Vinyl Tap plans to rock you on in to Friday with everything from The Beatles to Stevie Wonder, Huey Lewis and more. Check ‘em out beginning at 9:30.

And if you’re feeling a little more nostalgic for bands such as Sublime, Blink 182 and even say Chumbawumba, then you can always head right across the street to Bull Feeney’s in the Old Port where 90s cover band Hello Newman will be getting the party started right around 9:30.

If you’re south of Portland this Thirstday evening head down to Fury’s Publick House in Dover, NH where brothers Cody and Clint Phipps will be bringing their acoustic country-rock act PitchBlack Ribbons to the stage. Tonight you can check the fellas out as they play a set for free beginning at 9 o’clock.

A pretty sweet event is taking place over at Blue on Congress Street tonight where Samuel James and Dana Gross present The Ultimate Song Trade Off.  How it works is that an audience member is urged to request a song, then either Samuel or Dana will play that song and whichever of the two is up next to play will have to choose a song that is clearly derivative of the song just played.  My explanation seems confusing, but trust me, this sounds really entertaining.  Things get started right around 10 tonight.
