The no-buy gift guide a.k.a regifting

By: Laura Serino

When I refer to “regifting” I’m not referring to the commonly used term. Rather than pass along a gift you received and disliked to someone else, I recommend passing on gifts that you love to others. Here’s a great example. I love this bag.

I love this bag so much that I have been unable to donate it to Goodwill or to SWAP Maine, even though I haven’t used it in over five years. But it’s a classic, high-end item that deserves a loving home. So what am I going to do? I’m going to wrap it up and pass it on to a friend this holiday season. It’s a no-buy gift and it’s brilliant.

This principle can work in all different realms. Have you read a great book? Wrap it up and pass it on. Own a recipe book that has a newbie baker’s name written all over it? Dog ear your favorite recipes and gift it a new home. That little black dress that hasn’t fit you since college but it’s still insanely stylish? Give it to a smaller, fashion-forward friend. Now I’m not suggesting you use the holiday season as a way to clean out your closet or bookshelves. I think this can only work if you’re really passing something along that you think someone will appreciate it.

Join me in my pursuit of regifting, friends! What do you think about this notion? Is it totally cheap and stingy – or a great idea?
