Handwoven mittens and scarves from herron clothier

By: Laura Serino

Herron Clothier is a small weaving company founded by Dee Clements, a very recent Portland resident. Her work focuses on hand crafted, slow design for the home and body. Born out of the desire to put quality back into the textile and garment industry, her goal was to create heirloom pieces that are made to last by reviving traditions in hand weaving and sewing. The business is still small – and growing – since each piece is carefully woven by hand on a Schacht Spindle Floor loom using the highest quality fibers both new and organic and sourced in the USA when possible.

Clements founded her brand after a short residency at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. She had studied weaving as an undergraduate and always kept a studio while working other full-time jobs. “I felt that the work I was making in the studio had a lot of integrity and care put it into and could stand up on it’s own in the handmade market,” she says.

Professionally, Clements was formerly the Head Seamstress at The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago where she learned a great deal about making garments for an active body and also had a brief stint as a seamstress with Cirque du Soleil! Though costumery isn’t her passion, the experience helped refine her skills.

Currently, Clements is working on a limited-edition collection for spring that’s inspired by the costumery in the Nijinsky ballet Le Sacre Du Printemps from 1913. “I had the great opportunity to work on this show with the Joffrey Ballet in 2009. It is a really special piece of Dance history that has inspired me artistically and I am drawing on some of it’s elements in this new line,” says Clements. And in her off time, she’s busy exploring new spots in Maine.

If you’re interested in purchasing items from Herron Clothiers you can check out her shop online or visit her pieces in person at Portland Trading Company.
