Fall fashion trends from the runway to the real world

By: Laura Serino

I’m not a big fan of New York Fashion Week. It seems like it’s become more of a “scene” than it is about fashion these days. But I do like to keep abreast of all the projected trends that are on the runway and see how they fit into real life. I mean, I can’t imagine anyone in Portland ever walking around town in this but fashion is meant to be a little outrageous, if not unrealistic! After pouring through all the September issues and coverage from last season’s runway, here are some trends that I think will be easy to fit into your everyday wardrobe.

American Pastoral
This is a term a lot of the magazines are coining, though I like to think of it as classic New England style. Think tweed jackets, riding boots and cozy, cabled sweaters. It’s what you’d wear in an English countryside or on a chilly weekend in Maine.

Luxe Tux
Menswear continues to be a popular trend in women’s fashion, but this takes it up a notch. Try a white satin blazer in place of a cardigan or get a pair of black trousers with a black satin stripe down the side. You will most certainly look smoking in a smoking jacket. See what I did there? I crack myself up.

Moto Jackets
If satin blazers aren’t your thing, try a motorcycle-inspired jacket. They come in every color under the rainbow and you can opt for a “pleather” version to try the trend out on a budget. This is a great style that both guys and gals can pull off.

Post-Modern Pinups
Inspiration from the 40′s and 50′s fashions (thank you Mad Men) continues. This season, think Betty Draper at the office with the rise of fitted sweaters paired with pencil skirts. Even better if they are in similar hues. For guys, this extends to suits in slimmer cuts and skinny ties.

Fancy Sweatshirts
Okay so this was actually a runway trend! I swear! Exhibit a. And just try googling “Givenchy sweatshirt”. A $1,000 runway sweatshirt does in fact exist. Think of a new way to wear your classic gray sweatshirt (with a silk skirt? over a dress?) or pick a more elevated style, with options that range from lace fronts or leather sleeves or chambray details. If sweatpants become more widely accepted too, you can guarantee I am going to wear it.
