Fore Front Fashion

A few portland trends from 2012 that can stay in 2012

By: Laura Serino

Sometimes we don’t get it right Portland. Not all the time, just once in awhile. There were a few trends in Portland that I chronicled over the past year that I’d prefer be left in the past. I’m the last person to say that there are “rules” in fashion. Guidelines, sure, but rules? Nah. Here are just a few trends that were all over the streets of Portland in 2012 that I am officially over.

The ironic t-shirt
Yes, there’s a time and  a place for these. And yes, I often squeal in delight when I find a wolf howling at a moon while thrifting. But perhaps we’ve overdone them this past year and need to move on to a new t-shirt phenomenon.

Uggs
Why am I still seeing these on the streets? We live in the land of Bean Boots, people! No excuses anymore!

Onesies
Also known as rompers or jumpsuits. Sigh. This is a hard one for me to admit as I was a very guilty culprit. But let’s be honest, they’re completely impractical and make trips to the loo unbearable. I am willing to hang up my chambray romper for the good of mankind.

Going Shirtless
Okay. Now this is a phenomenon that I am convinced only happens in Portland. Why is it that the first sign of warm weather, men decide to take off their shirts and tuck them into their back pockets. Why? Is a t-shirt really that suffocatingly hot? Are they doing it to taunt me? Fellas, if you need help figuring out what to do when it gets hot out, just ask. I’ll help. Seersucker, a lightweight t-shirt, linen…there are options.

What about you? What are some of the fashion trends you’d like to bid adieu to in 2013? Let me know!
