Time for another thrilling Thursday

By: Holly Nunan

We are slowly but surely easing our way into the freakin’ weekend, my babies!  It’s been one heck of a week and I’m ready to hoist up my Party Pants and get on down this evening.  If you’re feeling the same Thursday night scenario I’m putting down, then here are where the haps are at tonight. Do it to it!

Chances are you’ve seen Eric Bettencourt around town playing guitar and singing his head off with his super fun cover band Velourosaurus, but tonight might be the last time you’ll get to see Eric for quite some time as he gets ready to head down to Austin, Texas.  Eric’s more than just a dude who can blast out cover songs; he’s an expressive and immensely talented guitar player and vocalist.  Tonight he says goodbye for now with a truly intimate show over at One Longfellow Square in Portland.  Bettencourt’s inimitable voice and enthralling guitar technique make his live shows something of beauty, so do not miss your chance to see him before he hits the road.  Opening the evening will be indie folk act Old Soul’s front man Mike O’Heir.  This is definitely a show not to be missed so make sure you get to One Longfellow right at 8pm.

Empire Dine and Dance in Portland holds a one-night only music festival to help benefit Guitar Doors, a Maine based non-profit group providing music programming to individuals incarcerated in Maine.  The power of music is very real and this group is hoping to expand their programming to the youth of Lewiston.  A $5 donation at the door will get you upstairs and into a night of Maine’s finest act including A Severe Joy, Forget, Forget, Mystic Folk Opera and Tumbling Bones.  Guitar Doors participants will also be playing some tunes, so do some good and check it out tonight starting at 9pm.

If you’re looking to check out some experimental indie folk with a dash of rock then make your way to Geno’s in Portland tonight where Bryan McPherson will be playing alongside Micah Blue Smaldone and Butcher Boy.  It’s bound to be a helluva show, so check it out starting at 9 o’clock this evening.

Another show that is hoping to do some good takes place at Slainte Wine Bar & Lounge in Portland tonight where some local rap renegades come together to raise some funds for a sick pooch named Bruno whose owner needs some help paying off some steep vet bills.  This evening check out some fresh sets from Don Damiani on the turntables as well as rhymes from Altered Gee, God.Damn.Chan, Fresh Heir and more.  A mere $1 donation is being asked to check out this show that gets underway around 9 o’clock.

Crowd favorites Kilcollins will be doing their pop-rock thing tonight over at RiRa in Portland tonight. Rocking and/or rolling gets underway right around 9 tonight with covers of tunes that everyone knows and loves from the fellas in Kilcollins.

The Big Easy‘s chilled out Thursday night crowd will be shuffling in right around 9:30 for this week’s Band Beyond Description show. What to expect: hula hoops, hippies, and good times for all with Portland’s favorite Grateful Dead cover band, who actually cover way more than just The Dead. So if you’re into mellowing your mind, get your can over to The Big Easy.

If you’re looking for some live roots, reggae, and dub-step this thirsty Thursday then make your way over to Bull Feeney’s and hang out with Gorilla Finger Dub Band.  Tonight these fellas come together to provide you with some extremely danceable party music for those of you who appreciate all things reggae and dub.  You can check out Gorilla Finger Dub Band featuring Jonah Bruce of The Running Gags on sax for free as they take the stage right around 9.

If you’re looking to grab a nice cocktail and take in some experimental jazz that mosey on over to Sonny’s in the Old Port this evening where the Jaw Gems will be doing their thing from 10 o’clock until closing time.  I’d definitely suggest making it down to this intimate, laid-back event.

If you’re hanging in Hallowell this evening swing by The Easy Street Lounge where local musician David Jacquet does his acoustic duo thing tonight. Starting at 9, David will be playing some acoustic jams alongside his Uke n’ Smile band mate, Keith Kitchin. Jacquet will be singing songs you know and love and some that you’ve never heard, but will love all the same.
