Vinyl Tap brings the thunder to Gritty’s Thursday night party

By: Holly Nunan

Ah yes, Thursday, my favorite day of the week is here.  It’s just so wonderful that tonight I can go out in my Party Pants, consume as many vodka sodas as I want and yet still be okay with the fact that I have to work tomorrow because tomorrow is Friday.  It truly is a glorious thing.  We’ve got some ground to cover, so let’s check out what this Thursday is throwing down.

Local singer-songwriter Brian Patricks will be playing original tunes pairs with classic that everyone knows and loves over at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial Street in Portland this evening.  Patricks gets things started right around 7 o’clock for this free event.

If you’re kicking around Westbrook tonight, stop in The Frog & Turtle where the acoustic duo known as Uke n’ Smile will be doing their thing featuring David Jacquet on ukulele and Keith Kitchen on percussion. It’s a free gig, there’s tasty food, and boozy drinks, so check it out beginning at 7.

Portland’s Post Provost goes south this evening as they bring their super eclectic folk pop sounds to The Run of The Mill in Saco this evening.  Beginning at 8 o’clock you can check out PP’s free set, which incorporates everything from ukulele, accordian, trombone and more.

A great night of jazz standards with a bit of a twist awaits guests at Gingko Blue in Portland as local siren Megan Jo Wilson teams up with Bob Hamilton, Duane Edwards and Chas Lester for a gig as the Birdland Jazz Quartet.  Things get started at 8 o’clock.

If you’re looking for a little twang this Thursday then check out national country act Eli Young Band as they heat things up over at the State Theatre in Portland.  Things get started right around 8 o’clock with special guest JT Hodges.

Another great comedy show hits The Asylum in Portland tonight because sometimes all you really need is a good belly laugh. Tonight that’s exactly what you’ll get as starting at 8pm you can check out comedy sets from local laugh masters Mike Levinsky, Brian Stone, Kyron Hobdy, Kate Ghiloni and Lue Avent. This event is absolutely free, so swing on by and chuckle it out.

Brothers Cody and Clint Phipps will be bringing their acoustic country-rock act, PitchBlack Ribbons, over to The Dogfish Bar & Grille in Portland.  Tonight you can check the fellas out as they play a set for free beginning at 8.

If you’re down south in Dover Rock City this evening, be sure to swing on by The Dover Brickhouse where Paranoid Social Club/Rustic Overtones frontman Dave Gutter will be crooning songs during a solo acoustic set. It’s a great way to check out all your favorite tunes in a stripped down fashion.  Things get started at The Brickhouse right around 9pm.

Indie pop rockers The Milkman’s Union returns home from tour and play their first Portland show since July over at Empire Dine and Dance tonight. The boy’s beards are undoubtedly wild and ready to get weird this evening.  Chamberlin and GinLab join them for this homecoming party, which gets underway right around 9 o’clock this evening

So Velourosaurus front man, Eric Bettencourt has packed up shop and shipped on down to Austin, TX, but that doesn’t mean the party has stopped over at Gritty’s in Portland this Thursday night.  Tonight the remaining members of Velourosaurus have joined forces with Kris “Fingers” Rodgers for a new cover band known as Vinyl Tap. Beginning at 9:30 the fellas will be playing you all the hits that you know and love with Rodgers tickling the keys.  It’s free and always an awesome time, so check it out.

The Big Easy‘s regular, chilled out Thursday crowd will be shuffling in right around 9:30 for this week’s Band Beyond Description show. What to expect: hula hoops, hippies, and good times for all with Portland’s favorite Grateful Dead cover band, who actually cover way more than just The Dead. So if you’re into mellowing your mind, get your can over to The Big Easy.

Start the weekend early tonight at Bull Feeney’s in Portland with some live roots, reggae, and dub-step with the Gorilla Finger Dub Band. These fellas come together right around 9 o’clock to provide some extremely danceable party music for anyone who loves and appreciates all things reggae and dub.

North of Nashville will be rocking their weekly gig over at Brian Boru right around 9:30pm and won’t stop the party until last call. Jay and Andrew infuse their love of pop music with a little bit of bluegrass for a sound that is truly American.  This is a free show and always a lot of fun, so check it out.

The jazz-funk fusion act that is Groove Ruckus takes over Blue on Congress Street in Portland tonight. You can check out this talented group of musicians as they bring their own flavor of sound to life starting at 10.

Looking to kick back with a tasty cocktail and take in some experimental jazz and funk paired with a little bit of hip hop?  Then make your way down to Sonny’s in the Old Port where Jaw Gems will be doing their thing from 10 until closing time.
