Here Comes The Weekend!

By: Holly Nunan

Here it is, you guys, the day we’ve been contemplating since Monday; that beautiful, elusive beast known as Friday. Tonight is full of so much phenomenal stuff that this post might burst at the seams, nonetheless, let’s get ‘er doing and see what happens!

There’s a ton of stuff happening early in the evening tonight starting with the first installment of Frugal Fridays over at Empire Dine and Dance in Portland.  Beginning at 5 o’clock Portland’s own The Substitutes will be bringing you the best in old school pop and rock with everything from The Beatles to The Who to The Monkees and more, even better this evening’s early show is absolutely free.  So if you’re looking to wind down your workweek with some good ol’ fashioned rock n’ roll, swing on by The Empire and check ‘em out.

The DIY cooperative venue Dirigimus bids adieu this evening with a final farewell party tonight.  This last party will be louder than wrecking balls and will feature performances from some choice local rockers and rollers like Vanishing Act, The Coalsack in Crux, RSO, Sylvia, Dead By Now, Paige Turner and more.   Come say goodbye and rage wicked hard starting at 7.

If you’re hanging at home, getting ready for a night out on the town, why not tune in to Local Motives on WMPG 90.9 FM and check out some in-studio tunes by The Mallett Brothers Band?  The fellas will be performing their country-tinged rockers and talking shop beginning at 7:30.

Port City Music Hall celebrates all that is reggae rock tonight as they welcome Roots of Creation to the stage.  Kicking things off for the fellas this evening will be Portsmouth’s All Good :: Feel Good Collective as well as Portland’s own The Running Gags.  Let your inner lion out beginning at 8 o’clock.

The prohibition is back at The Big Easy tonight as The Fogcutters celebrate Halloween 1920s with a Speak Easy Ball.  Bust out those flapper dresses and gangsters hats and get ready to roar on back to the ‘20s with Portland’s own unique big band beginning at 8.

Phil Divinsky shows us all where offspring Lyle got all his soul from the evening as he and his Americana rhythm & blues outfit The ToneKings return to The Frog & Turtle in Westrbook tonight.  You can enjoy the smooth, delightful sounds of The ToneKings starting right around 8:30 at this fabulous gastro pub located right in downtown Westbrook.

Lots of stringed things being plucked over at Empire Dine and Dance in Portland tonight as two very unique bluegrass bands take the stage for one night only.  Tonight you can check out Massachusetts based progressive string band Hot Day At The Zoo alongside Portland’s own Tricky Britches for a night of old timey, roots music. It should be a rollicking good time upstairs at The Empire.  Things get started right around 8:30 tonight.

The artists’ alliance known as Dead Language Collective presents an evening of tuneage at Slainte Wine Bar & Lounge this Friday evening. Beginning at 9 you’ll hear everything from Smashing Pumpkins-esque tunes to dark, acoustic jams to songs that sound like they could’ve lived on Nirvana’s debut album as CHRY, Exit Songs, Special B and Gravel take the stage all evening long.

And it should be absolutely no surprise that things are going to get rowdy at Geno’s Rock Club in Portland tonight as two celtic bands and a local hip-hop legend team up for an evening of debauchery.  Tonight the mighty Pubcrawlers team up with Pennsylvania’s Kilmaine Saints to bring your earholes some Irish drinking tunes that get the punk rock treatment.  If that isn’t enough ruckus for ya, hip-hop heavy Brzowski will be on hand to perform in between sets.  Things get shaking starting at 9 o’clock.

If you’re looking to kick up your heels and maybe even do a little bowling then head over to Bayside Bowl right around 8 o’clock where mosart212 will be spinning records all night long.

More dance music happening over at Flask Lounge in Portland tonight as the event Downtown Sound takes place this evening. Starting at 9, j.hjort and Elusid will be joining forces to bring you the very best in underground electronic dance music.

If you’re up in Ellsworth tonight, head over to Chummies where the very unique prog-rock band, The 220s will be playing.  The 220s take their influences from The Beatles to Pink Floyd to Radiohead and create something that is truly all their own.  Check ‘em out starting at 9 tonight.

If you’re down south this evening the place to be is Dover Rock City as The Dover Brickhouse gears up for the 5th Annual Halloween Bash with rockers Paranoid Social Club.  Tonight things are truly going to get wild as Vermont rockers and rollers Waylon Speed, who will get things cranking right around 9 tonight, join the fellas for this year’s bash.
