Slip sliding away: Snow tubing parks in Maine

Slip sliding away: Snow tubing parks in Maine
December 31, 2012

Winter brings with it plenty of ice and snow. Maybe you’ve noticed. We can either curse it (and how it makes us fall down and slide into ditches) or we can embrace it, preferably with a giant tube. Find a place to slide this winter with our roundup of snow tubing parks.

Ice Skating

Ice Skating
December 26, 2012

Swimming isn’t as enticing this time of year, when ice cover makes the breaststroke more painful than necessary. So lace up some skates instead, and glide across those ponds without the need of a swimsuit.

Wherever you are, and whomever you’re with, enjoy.

Enjoy the fam, the mashed potatoes, and the hand-knit socks from Aunt Betsy. And we’ll see you when you get back. (And if you haven’t made plans for New Year’s Eve yet, check out our NYE Guide.)

STAY HOME

STAY HOME
December 22, 2012

Stay home. Nap. Create sculptures out of leftover mashed potatoes, or seize the opportunity to practice your planking form. And nap. Did we already mention the nap? But if you must be on the roads, take care. We can’t stop Mother Nature’s snowy pummeling, we can prepare ourselves for the wintry slip ‘n slide.

FIX THE SHADOWS

FIX THE SHADOWS
December 19, 2012

Good things happen in garages, particularly when there aren’t any cars in them. Without the presence of an auto to look after, garages tend to get creative. The photographic results of such a car shed-turned-photo-lab are on display Friday during the “Fix The Shadows” opening at Portland Company Complex.

Fair or Foul: Sitting on Santa’s lap

Fair or Foul: Sitting on Santa’s lap
December 18, 2012

Every kid loves Santa. Except when those kids are confronted with Santa. All the patience and jovial belly-jiggling in the world won’t stop many kids from completely freaking out on Santa’s lap. So why do we do it? For the kids, right? Or do we just like laughing at the pictures of them crying? Take the poll.

BAH, HUMBUG!

BAH, HUMBUG!
December 18, 2012

It’s easy for some of us to get into the Christmas spirit. For others, it takes a visit from a deceased friend draped in chains. Sometimes that doesn’t even do the trick, and the Ghosts of Christmas have to start pulling out headstones. Seeing their own lonely demise has a way of turning a curmudgeon around. It worked for Ebenezer Scrooge.

Nicknamed “Pie Town USA” by the Food Network after Bobby Flay visited for a pie throwdown, Rockland is living up to its name with the 9th Annual Pies on Parade Pie Tour to celebrate National Pie Day (National Pie Day is celebrated each year on Jan 23rd).

WONDERFUL YOUR LIFE

WONDERFUL YOUR LIFE
December 16, 2012

We’ve seen “It’s a Wonderful Life” a thousand times – and it’s a darn wonderful tear-jerker every time. And the characters have become funny, curmudgeonly, and oh-so-generous friends we look forward to seeing every year, at least on TV. But Monday we can see them in person. One person, in fact. His name is Jody McColman, and he’ll be playing every character in “This Wonderful Life.”
